Research
The ESAIC aims to advance patient outcomes and contribute to the progress of anaesthesiology and intensive care evidence-based practice through research. The ESAIC Clinical Trial Network (CTN), the Academic Contract Research Organisation (A-CRO), the Research Groups and Grants all contribute to the knowledge and clinical advances in the peri-operative setting.
The Society is participating in multiple EU projects that address different aspects of patient safety and perioperative care. These initiatives involve creating advanced digital tools to assist with decision-making systems in monitoring, predicting, and treating COVID-19 patients in intensive care units. Additionally, there are efforts to enhance patient safety in surgical care by introducing standardisation, harmonisation, and implementing continuous learning health systems across Europe. These research endeavours demonstrate the Society's continuous dedication to advancing the field of anaesthesia and critical care and enhancing patient outcomes.

In addition, there were the following publications for MET-Repair (2016)
The patient recruitment numbers for each CTN study were as follows by the end of 2023
Main paper published – BJA 2023-April-“ Risk assessment for major adverse cardiovascular events after noncardiac surgery using self-reported functional capacity: international prospective cohort study”.
Sub Study published-Nov 2023-Jama Network Open: “NT-proBNP or Self-Reported Functional Capacity in Estimating Risk of Cardiovascular Events After Noncardiac Surgery”
Clinical Trial Network (CTN)
The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinical Trial Network (CTN) provides an infrastructure for Institutions, clinicians and scientists allowing to work collaboratively across international borders to improve the care of patients in the field of anaesthesiology, intensive care, perioperative medicine, emergency medicine and pain medicine. International networks all over the world have demonstrated the advantages of collaboration to address and answer clinically relevant research questions.

Academic Clinial Research Organisations (A-CRO)
The ESAIC is the largest professional community of anaesthesiologists and intensive care physicians in Europe. Their research network and in-house services make them the best academic contract research organisation (A-CRO) for partners looking for the end-to-end support required to successfully conduct their international clinical studies. With a network of over 500 hospitals and research partners around the world, ESAIC can deliver high-quality clinical studies efficiently and on time.
The 2 trials had been running since 2017 and in 2023 the collection of the 1 year follow up data was completed. All sites were closed, and the database was locked, and the data cleaned.
This trial is part of the COVend project which is funded by an EU grant, and which started in 2021. In 2023 the protocol was changed from COVID-19 to ARDS; the trial is now investigating the potential of FX06 (a naturally occurring peptide in humans) to prevent disease progression in hospitalized, non-intubated ARDS patients.
The ESAIC is acting as a CRO and has extensive roles in Project Management, Monitoring and Data Management.
This year, due to the change in the target population, the 5 ESAIC sites (in 4 countries) had to submit substantial amendments to regulatory authorities and ethics committees. The complex electronic Case Report Form (eCRF) was updated and all associated study documents were amended.
