Patient Safety
The ESAIC envisions a healthcare system free from preventable patient harm. The Patient Safety and Quality Committee leads efforts to achieve this in anaesthesia, intensive care, emergency, and pain medicine. The ESAIC has significantly contributed to the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology and the European Consensus Statement on perioperative safety, promoting patient safety as a primary concern. They organise educational activities, conferences, and research projects, facilitating collaboration among practitioners to improve patient safety standards. Their work ensures the adoption of best practices and continuous improvement in patient safety across Europe.
In 2023, the ESAIC's commitment to patient safety was evident through significant progress in various initiatives. The Safer Care to Save Lives(SCSL) programme continued, publishing two modules and progressing on three more. The Advanced Patient Safety Course (APSC) reached a milestone with a completed student manual and agreements with three national societies. A Train-the-Trainer (TTT) manual was also developed. The Peer Review for Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (PRiPSAIC) project concluded with a final report and toolkit. The ESAIC Quality Indicator Project (EQUIP) manuscript was submitted for review to the EJA. The Patient Safety Newsletter published 14 articles in September 2023 to commemorate World Patient Safety Day, and successful APSC courses were held in several European cities, ensuring healthcare professionals have the latest knowledge and tools.
